Caroline Spencer is a canine behaviourist, author, and ProDog’s resident expert on the powerful link between diet and behaviour. With over three decades of experience, she’s dedicated her career to helping dog owners understand what drives their dog’s choices and how to build relationships rooted in trust, not control.
Her journey started with Harvey, a Labrador with a talent for escaping and a relentless prey drive. The challenges he presented became Caroline’s education, sparking a lifelong commitment to decoding canine behaviour. Twenty years ago, when she became a parent herself, her approach shifted entirely. She began drawing parallels between raising children and raising dogs, ultimately coining the philosophy: “Raise dogs, don’t train them.”
Caroline is the author of Why Does My Dog Do That? and co-author of Parenting Your New Puppy. Her work focuses on addressing root causes of behaviour, not just symptoms, with particular expertise in separation anxiety, fussy eating, and food-related behaviours.
Caroline’s work places a strong emphasis on emotions at both ends of the lead.
At ProDog, Caroline offers 20-minute free consultations to support dog owners with the often-overlooked link between nutrition and behaviour, from fussy eating and other food-related behaviours to separation anxiety and more. She also hosts in-person behaviour clinics at ProDog HQ throughout the year.
Her contributions to The ProDog Blog cover behaviour insights grounded in a holistic, nutrition-first approach. As a strong advocate of raw feeding, Caroline understands that what goes in the bowl directly impacts what comes out in behaviour.
