What is bone broth?
Bone broth is made from the bones and connective tissues of animals, creating a nutrient-dense stock that delivers health benefits for dogs and humans alike.
You can make bone broth using bones from just about any animal. Chicken, beef and lamb bone broth for dogs are all great options, whilst pork, turkey, venison, or fish can also be used to make nutritional bone broth recipes for dogs.
Boiling your bones of choice in water for a prolonged period (12-24 hours) with a splash of apple cider vinegar to help draw out the minerals, results in a nutritious treat or food topper that will do your canine pal a world of good, pleasing their taste buds all the while.
Since the invention of the pot, our ancestors have gathered around the fire and boiled up bone broths. Hippocrates the god father of medicine, born 460BC recommended it to people to heal digestive issues. Maimonides, a philosopher and physician born in Spain in 1138 ,recommended chicken bone broth as medicine, and it’s been used as a staple ingredient in asian cuisine for centuries.
So we can safely say bone broth isn’t a new fad, and though it’s only recently made its mainstream comeback, it’s been helping people heal from a wide variety of health ailments ever since. With recent nutritional research pinpointing digestive imbalance and gut issues as the root cause of many dog health concerns, it only makes sense that we share this nourishing food with our best friends.

Bone broth for joint health
Bone broth contains Glycosaminoglycans which are molecules found in all connective tissues that help keep our joints healthy. Hyaluronic acid, Glucosamine, Chondroitin are the most commonly known.
This nourishing brew also contains calcium, magnesium, plus several amino acids which support joint mobility and healthy inflammatory response.
It’s fast becoming the go to remedy of professional athletes for injury recovery and preventative joint care. Our canine friends are no different. Bone broth protects and lubricates joints and can even help reduce the symptoms associated with arthritis.
Bone broth for liver support
The liver is a master organ of the body, in charge of eliminating toxins from the system. This process is called detoxification. The liver relies on the availability of an amino acid called glycine to operate effectively. And yes you’ve guessed it, bone broth is packed full of glycine.
Your dog’s liver works super hard everyday to process the toxins taken in through everyday living. Chemicals are absorbed into the body from the environment, cleaning products, treatments on carpets and upholstery, processed foods, flea and worming treatments, pharmaceutical medicines and so much more.
The liver can become overloaded simply through day to day life. Bone broth offers extra support to the liver’s function, helping it to operate at optimum level.
Bone broth for kidney support
The kidneys are responsible for removing toxins and waste from the body, whilst filtering nutrients such as protein and controlling the fluid levels of the body.
To support kidney health, it is important to provide foods which are nutrient dense and moisture rich. Bone broth ticks both of these boxes. As an exceptionally hydrating food for dogs, bone broth can play a part in helping to maintain kidney health, and also places minimal demand on already compromised kidneys.
In addition, select herbs can act as a diuretic, and as such, can be added to bone broth, for example, ProDog’s dandelion and nettle infused bone broth for dogs provides extra nutritional support for the kidneys and the detox process.

Bone broth and digestive health
It’s no secret that gut health is of optimum importance to overall health. An unhealthy gut can lead to poor nutrient absorption and imbalanced immune response, in turn leading to systemic inflammation in the body and a whole host of health conditions.
Gut imbalance is the root of many health issues; something that is true of both humans and dogs. Imbalanced gut flora and damage to the lining of the gut can occur through stress, poor diet, and certain medications, amongst other things. The result is a compromised gut environment which can lead to allergies, digestive upset, skin conditions, joint mobility issues and more.
Rebalancing the gut is an important first step in improving overall health, and bone broth can be a key element in this process. Bone broth is a tonic for the digestive system because it contains collagen, which forms gelatin when it’s cooked down. Gelatin contains amino acids such as glutamine, this works to strengthen the integrity of the gut lining promoting a healthy gut environment that can resume functionality to support whole-body health.
