How to Defrost and Store Raw Dog Food Safely

Blog in 60 Seconds

In this guide, you will discover:

  • The safest way to defrost raw dog food is in the fridge overnight, this ensures the meal thaws slowly and remains safe from bacterial growth.
  • If you forget to defrost ahead of time, a cold-water bath works well: keep the meat sealed, submerge in cold water, change every 15–20 minutes until thawed.
  • Avoid unsafe methods like leaving food on the counter overnight or using hot water or microwaves, they risk bacterial growth or partially cooking the meat, which reduces nutritional quality.
  • Once defrosted, use the food immediately or store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours (some meals remain okay up to 3–4 days, depending on storage practices).
  • Proper food handling for raw dog diets is the same as for human raw meat: keep raw meals sealed, separate from ready-to-eat food, and stored cold to prevent cross-contamination.

I’m Anna Bain, certified canine nutritionist and writer here at ProDog. I know first-hand the panic that sets in when you open the freezer and realise your dog’s dinner is still solid as a brick. It happens to the best of us!

In this blog, I’ll walk you through how to safely defrost raw dog food, so you can keep your dog’s meals fresh, safe, and packed with the nutrients their body needs to thrive.

Whether you’re looking for tips on how to defrost raw dog food quickly, as part of your daily routine, or you’re simply unsure if you’re storing it the right way, don’t fret. There are a few simple, safe methods that can make the whole process much easier and keep every meal as nutritious as it should be.

Getting Your First Meal Ready

Contrary to some raw dog food myths, feeding and defrosting raw dog food is almost effortless.
The best (and safest) method for defrosting our raw dog food meals is in the fridge.

This method allows the food to thaw naturally and safely, reducing the risk of spoilage, even if it takes a little longer than other methods. The only time we’d recommend doing things differently is if you forget to take your dog’s food out in advance. Don’t worry, though, later in this article, I’ll explain how to defrost raw dog food quickly and safely when you’re short on time.

If You Don’t Need a Full Tub

If your dog doesn’t need a full tub in every meal, that’s ok! Simply pop the lid back on and put the unused portion back in the fridge right away to be used for their next meal.

You can safely store our raw dog food in the fridge, and it will stay fresh for up to four days (from frozen). This also means you can defrost several meals at once if it fits your routine, as long as you’ve got the fridge space for it.

HOW TO DEFROST RAW DOG FOOD QUICKLY

Woken up to give your dog their breakfast only to realise that you didn’t take the food out of the freezer? We’ve all been there!

If you need to defrost raw dog food quickly, the safest method is to use cold water, not heat. Keep the food sealed in its packaging and submerge it in a bowl or sink of cold tap water, changing the water every 15–20 minutes until thawed. This speeds up defrosting safely. Avoid using hot water or microwaves, they can partially cook the meat and destroy valuable nutrients, refer to our blog on Can You Cook Raw Dog Food? to find out more. Once thawed, serve immediately or store in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

WHAT ABOUT DEFROSTING ON THE COUNTER OVERNIGHT?

Defrosting raw dog food on the counter overnight might seem convenient, but it could allow the food to sit at room temperature for too long, creating the perfect environment for bacteria in raw dog food to grow. Although, this does depend on how long it has been left out and the temperature of the room. As a guide, if the food is still cold to the touch it is safe to feed.

The safest way to thaw raw meals is always in the fridge, where they can defrost slowly and evenly while staying at a controlled temperature.

And just as you would handle raw meat for your own meals, always store it securely; sealed, cold, and away from ready-to-eat foods. Following the same safe storage practices you’d use for human food helps prevent cross-contamination and keeps both your dog and your kitchen protected from unwanted bacteria.

WHAT ABOUT REFREEZING DEFROSTED FOOD?

Refreezing raw dog food once it has reached room temperature isn’t recommended, as this can compromise the safety and integrity of the proteins.

However, room temperature raw dog food can be stored in the fridge for up to three days, provided it still smells fresh and shows no signs of spoilage. Always store it in the coldest part of the fridge, ideally store it on the bottom shelf.

ProDog Raw products are dispatched frozen and may arrive partially defrosted. This is completely normal and expected with frozen delivery. If the food is still chilled (not fully thawed or at room temperature), it is safe to refreeze immediately. If the product has fully defrosted to room temperature, it should be stored in the fridge and used within 3 days. The meat should always smell fresh.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I THINK MY PRODOG RAW ORDER HAS DEFROSTED ON ARRIVAL?

I understand your concerns, however , provided the food is still cold to the touch the food is safe to place in the freezer on arrival.

Because the food is so fresh, it leaves our blast-freezer at -18 and is packaged in a way to maintain a safe temperature for up to 72 hrs. Admittedly this timescale may vary depending on the weather and outside temperature, so if the food arrives soft then please do a test with the back of your hand to assess whether it is still cold before freezing.

Touching the food by hand provides a much better idea of temperature than observation alone. It is safe to touch the food by hand provided you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

If, however, the food is soft through the middle and feels room temperature to touch this would be a reason to be cautious. You can salvage some by putting the tubs you can use within 3 days into the fridge; the rest should be disposed of.

Should this be the case with your food, then please send through a short video, to [email protected] demonstrating the softness of all the tubs affected, use a fork to demonstrate the food is entirely defrosted throughout.

CAN DOGS EAT FROZEN MEAT?

If you do find yourself with a hungry dog and a still-frozen tub of food, you may be wondering “can dogs eat frozen meat?” In the first instance, see our simple guide above on how to defrost raw food quickly. If you are really pushed for time, and have little choice, the answer will depend on your dog’s disposition.

Dogs can eat frozen raw food, but it’s generally best to let it defrost first. While eating it straight from the freezer won’t usually cause harm as a one-off, it can be a bit harsh on the stomach — particularly for dogs with sensitive digestion.

Every dog is different. Some may also find food served straight from the fridge too cold, which can occasionally upset digestion. If that’s the case, simply let the meal sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving to take the chill off.

However, many dogs are perfectly happy eating their food chilled from the fridge, it’s all about finding what works best for your individual dog.

WHAT ABOUT RAW FEEDING WHEN TRAVELLING?

If you’re heading to a holiday cottage or staying somewhere with freezer access, travelling with your dog’s raw food is easy and stress-free. You’ve got a few options:

  • Bring your own raw dog food supply and store it in the freezer when you arrive. If you’re only going away for a long weekend, you can take the food out of the freezer as you leave and store it in the fridge. It will stay fresh for up to three days.
  • Arrange a delivery directly to your holiday accommodation from ProDog.
  • Pick some up locally from a nearby pet store. Raw dog food is now widely available across the UK, so even if it’s not your usual brand, it’s still a far better choice than switching to processed food during your trip.

HOW TO STORE RAW DOG FOOD

In the Freezer

The average British freezer might not be that big, but you can still stock up on our frozen raw meals.

Our individual containers are either 500g or 1kg, easily stackable, and conveniently shaped to fit in your freezer easily.

With the general rule of thumb for freezer storage being 1 cubic foot per each 18kg of raw meat, this doesn’t account for conveniently shaped packaging; meaning you’ll likely be able to squeeze more in if needed.

To help you determine the storage space needed here are the dimensions of our tubs

500g = L 18cm x W 11cm x D 5cm
1kg = L 18cm x W 11cm x D 10cm

The smallest order we can deliver is 6kg, consisting of 12 x 500g tubs or 6 x1kg tubs. We also offer a range of raw food bundles, the smallest of which is 10kg.

As a rough guide, a 10kg bundle will take up approximately two standard size freezer drawers, but don’t forget, you can store food for up to 4 days in the fridge as well.

Additionally, if you prefer to store your dog’s meals separately from your own food, a dedicated meat freezer might be helpful.

HOW LONG CAN YOU STORE RAW DOG FOOD IN THE FREEZER?

Raw dog food can be safely stored in the freezer for up to 12 months, making it easy to stock up and plan ahead for your dog’s meals. However, it’s always best to check the best before date printed on the side of each tub, as this gives you the most accurate guidance for freshness and quality. Keeping your raw food well-sealed and at a consistent freezer temperature will help preserve its nutrients, flavour, and texture until it’s ready to be served.

CAN YOU FREEZE DOG TREATS AND BONES

Freezing dog treats and bones is a great way to keep them fresh for longer. Just make sure to follow the recommended freezing guidelines for each product and always use them before their best before date to maintain quality and safety.

HOW TO STORE DEFROSTED RAW DOG FOOD IN THE FRIDGE

Once defrosted, our raw dog food can safely remain in your fridge for up to 3 days. Our sealed tubs have secure lids, minimising the chance of spills or leakage.

It’s ideal to provide a space that’s only for raw dog food storage, just as you would with any raw meat.

The bottom shelf of your fridge is perfect for this: raw dog food won’t encounter any vulnerable foods like fruits or vegetables and will remain out of the reach of little hands that might be reaching for snacks.

STORING AND DEFROSTING RAW DOG FOOD MADE SIMPLE

The process of defrosting and storing raw dog food is as easy as with any other raw meat product: simply adhere to a few standard food safety guidelines, and you’ll be fine. You can refer to our article: Is Raw Dog Food Safe for further advice. Here you will find lots of useful guidance on storing and handling raw dog food safely, including hygiene tips like washing hands, surfacing sanitising and washing your dog’s bowls regularly.

My dog won’t eat the raw Prodog food, bought from Jolley’s as a trial.
Question: Can I HEAT the defrosted beef with chicken meal purchased?

ProDog

Hi Christine, No we do not advise cooking our raw meals due to the bone content. If you can email in [email protected] we will put you in contact with Caroline our in-house behaviourist who will give you some tips on how to get your dog to eat consistently.

Hello,

I have a question:
1. How do you ensure that the raw food is not contaminated with worms and any other parasites and their eggs?

Thank you

Emma

Hello,

Do the natural dog treats require refrigeration once opened?

ProDog
