Chunk had a tough start. Like many Shar Peis, he struggled with skin sensitivities and dog allergies, leaving Amanda desperate for a solution.
I tried the usual vet-prescribed flea and worm treatments, but they were a disaster; nothing worked—and some things made it worse,” Amanda recalls.
“He’d shake himself, and the flea stuff would literally fly off—it even made the paintwork bubble up where it landed! I couldn’t keep putting chemicals on him after seeing that.”
The more Amanda researched, the more she noticed a pattern. Every dog she’d had before Chunk had suffered from cancer, and she’d always fed processed food and relied on chemical parasite preventatives.
“I couldn’t help but wonder, was there a connection? I wasn’t willing to take that risk with Chunk.”
Meanwhile, his skin issues persisted. Seasonal allergies and flare-ups during shedding season were a nightmare. His tiny, hairy ears would become irritated, and his itchy eyes never seemed to improve. Even his anxiety levels played into his discomfort. Stress from household changes, like Christmas and New Year’s upheaval, seemed to make things worse.
