Raw Feeding BenefitsWe believe every dog has the right to experience the raw food effect

Shinier coat and
healthier skin

Our raw food for dogs is high in quality digestible protein and provide essential amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes and many other healthy ingredients that benefit the skin and fur. The result—a glossy coat that is the envy of the neighbourhood.

More stable
energy

We include minimal sugars and starches in our recipes, which means the sudden influx of glucose and insulin from these ingredients that dictate energy slumps and spikes, don’t occur. As a result, energy remains much more stable.

Increased vitality in
older dogs

Feeding raw foods to older dogs is beneficial in many ways. Natural ingredients are rich in antioxidants, minimise water retention and inflammation, and deliver natural joint support, all of which help older dogs to maintain energy and vitality.

Better
digestion

Our ingredients are biologically appropriate for a dog’s digestive system. Packed with natural enzymes, raw is digested much more efficiently, minimising digestive issues, gas and bloating.

Improved mobility &
ease of movement

We include balanced ratios of bone and collagen in our raw food for dogs, making them a natural source of calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine, and chondroitin. These nutrients contribute to joint health by reducing inflammation and strengthening ligaments for improved mobility.

Easier weight
control

By formulating our raw food recipes using high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate ingredients, we ensure ProDog meals deliver a dog’s most important energy sources in perfectly balanced ratios. As such, weight management improves naturally.

Reduction of allergies
and sensitivities

Our raw food meals are naturally hypoallergenic because we include zero ingredients known to trigger allergy symptoms, such as grains, gluten, fillers, synthetic colourings, and preservatives. Meanwhile, the gut is the root of allergy symptoms. A diet rich in nutrients that nourish the gut, such as natural glutamine and gentle food on the digestive system, can drastically reduce allergy symptoms.

Improved
physique

Healthy muscle tone, definition, posture, and shape all improve with a quality raw food diet. We expertly formulate our recipes to deliver optimal protein levels, thereby providing the amino acids necessary to promote muscle density and healthy muscle gain whilst also supporting the reduction of excess weight caused by fluid retention or unnecessary fat stores.

Reinforced immune
system

A raw food diet contains live bacteria and enzymes that support effective digestion; this means the abundance of nutrients in the fresh, natural ingredients are easily absorbed and transported to the cells and systems that need them, including the immune system. ProDog raw food provides enriching, immune-boosting nutrition in every meal

Reduced hyperactivity
& behavioural issues

The gut and brain are connected, and a dog’s food can either nourish or damage the gut. Because a natural raw food diet helps to maintain harmony in the gut, it can positively influence the delicate balance of neurotransmitters sending signals to the brain that impact mood, cognition and behaviour.

Surveys show that owners describe their pets as friendlier, more interactive, sociable, and affectionate once they switch to a raw diet.

Fresher breath and
better dental hygiene

Our barf food for dogs contains minimal starches and sugars, providing no fuel for dental plaque to thrive. Adding raw bones and natural chews improves dental health further. The chewing action required to gnaw natural chews eliminates plaque and bacteria damaging to teeth.

Smaller, firmer, less
odour stools

Dogs create less waste when fed a raw diet because most of their food is fully digested and utilised. Bone firms stools, which makes them easy to pick up. This firmer consistency also helps the natural expression of anal glands, preventing them from filling up and becoming inflamed.

Common Misconceptions

MISCONCEPTION 1 - Raw food diets are unbalanced

ProDog frozen food is designed to give dogs everything they need for a nutritionally balanced diet.
Our Complete Formula range is nutritionally balanced to meet FEDIAF nutritional guidelines. This meal option consists of 80% meat (incl. 10% bone content unless otherwise stipulated), 18% vegetables and superfoods such as wheatgrass and salmon oil. Depending on your dog’s breed or requirements, we also provide options with offal or without. Our Pure 80:10:10, Exotics, and Economy Core ranges are complementary raw dog food for dogs requiring a restricted diet due to food intolerances/ allergies or dog owners who like to tailor their dog’s diet to their specific needs.

MISCONCEPTION 2 - Raw diets are expensive

Premium meat-based products will always come at a higher cost than low-quality biscuit-style dog foods, which often incorporate subpar ingredients like maize, wheat, and corn. Nevertheless, a raw dog food diet can remain remarkably budget-friendly, with pricing that rivals those of more upscale commercial food options.

Choosing a natural canine diet is a strategic investment in your dog’s well-being. The health benefits of a quality raw dog food diet mean that investing in biologically appropriate raw food will help your dog thrive and potentially reduce expenditure on medication and vet bills.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Comparison prices for ProDog Raw dog food vs. top-of-the-range kibble
Based on the top 5 best-rated, high-meat-based kibble brands (according to All About Dog Food.com), the average daily cost to feed a 25kg dog is between £1.80- £2.20 per day. This price excludes potential delivery costs.

To feed a 25kg dog, ProDog Raw food will cost £2.13 per day, including free delivery. This price is based on buying our Core Bundle. ProDog raw bundles provide the perfect selection of meals tailored to specific canine needs, and all come with free delivery. As convenient and easy as feeding kibble, order direct to your door, defrost, pop the lid and serve!

MISCONCEPTION 3 - Dogs need carbohydrates

While dogs can digest small amounts of carbohydrates, one big difference between how dogs and humans process food is that humans can convert carbohydrates into storable energy, whereas dogs cannot.

The Waltham Book of Dog and Cat Nutrition (2nd edition, 1988) states:
“There is no known minimum dietary carbohydrate requirement for the dog or the cat. Based on investigations in the dog and with other species, it is likely that dogs and cats can be maintained without carbohydrates if the diet supplies enough fat or protein from which the metabolic requirement for glucose is derived.”

Feeding dogs high ratio carbohydrate foods over time can lead to them becoming overweight and obese, as well as many associated health problems. Learn more about some of the problems with feeding dogs carbohydrates here.

MISCONCEPTION 4 - Dogs are too domesticated for raw diets

While dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, their digestive systems still retain many of the characteristics of their wild ancestors. Dogs are part of the Canidae family, which includes wolves, foxes, and other wild canids. This means that they are biologically designed to eat a raw meat diet.

A raw dog food diet is also referred to as a ‘biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) because this type of diet aligns more closely with a dog’s evolutionary diet and, as such, provides many potential benefits.

However, it’s important to note that transitioning to a raw food diet from a commercial pet food diet requires some considerations. Factors such as your dog’s age, length of time eating processed foods, digestive condition and more may determine the speed of the switch. Feeding high-carb-based processed foods for long periods alters the enzymes and acid levels in the digestive system. This means the levels required to process a raw food diet may need a little time and nurturing to rebalance.

Please read our complete guide to switching your dog to a raw food diet and discover the exact steps to take.

MISCONCEPTION 5 - Raw food = aggression & bloodthirst

A raw diet does not make a dog aggressive. On the contrary, a biologically appropriate raw food diet is made with fresh and natural ingredients packed with highly bioavailable vitamins and minerals, which will help your dog achieve a more stable temperament.
In contrast, many commercial dog food products such as kibble and tinned foods are made with intensively processed meat and meat derivatives, bulking out with cheap fillers and additives that should not be part of a dog’s diet. Over time, this diet can affect a dog’s physical and emotional health.

Read more about raw food and dog aggression in our blog.

MISCONCEPTION 6 - Feeding raw will give my dog worms

A well-balanced, quality, prepared raw food diet will not cause worm infestations. Worms, such as roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms, are parasitic organisms that can affect dogs regardless of their diet. Worm infestations are primarily a result of environmental exposure, poor hygiene, or interactions with infected animals.

A balanced biologically appropriate raw (BARF) diet helps maintain a robust immune system and overall health, potentially reducing the risk of parasitic infections.
If you are buying your raw food from a reputable manufacturer, there is no reason why your dog should contract any sort of parasite from a raw diet.

ProDog Raw is DEFRA-approved, so we only use premium quality, human-grade meat and follow stringent quality protocols and testing criteria. To learn more about Prodog Raw’s ‘quality promise,’ visit our About page.

MISCONCEPTION 7 - Bacteria in raw food is harmful to my dog

This is a prevalent myth, yet the truth is that a raw food diet for dogs is safer than many other types of dog food for various reasons. To learn more, read our article, Is Raw Dog Food Safe?
Our raw dog food follows safety protocols through lab testing, proper production and freezing practices, and careful packaging to ensure freshness. Our food is DEFRA-approved, manufactured in a clean and healthy environment, and we only use premium quality, human-grade meat. Each batch of food we make is tested explicitly for Salmonella and E.coli as per DEFRA requirements. Find out more about ProDog Raw’s ‘quality promise’ here.

If you defrost our food correctly, store it in a refrigerator and then use it within 72 hours, you won’t encounter any problems. Please read our guide to handling raw dog food safely for more recommendations.

Dogs have evolved to eat a raw diet without our help since the dawn of canine existence, so they instinctively know what’s good for them. A raw diet is the most effective way to give your dog the nutrients they need for optimal health.

Raw Feeding FAQs

Will my dog like raw food?

Dogs are famously indiscriminating feeders, and will try to eat everything from raw steaks through to pizza, chocolate, and even household rubbish, if given the opportunity. This is because smell is their strongest sense, and appealing smells are more often than not what leads them to wanting to eat certain foods.

A very good example of this is how so many dogs like cheese. While dogs have not evolved to eat and digest dairy products, cheese’s strong and distinct smell is nevertheless extremely appealing to them.

Most dogs will find the scent of raw meat – which is what our feeds are primarily based on – almost irresistible. Based on this premise, it is highly unlikely that any dog will not like our products solely based on how they smell. Just because a dog eats something does not mean that it actually particularly likes it. We have found that when offered a choice between raw products and kibble, the dog will almost always naturally select to eat the raw meat.

What is the BARF diet and is it the same as raw feeding?

BARF, or the BARF Diet generally stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, but equally was coined as an acronym by early raw feeding dog owners as: Bones And Raw Food.

Ultimately, whether you call it “BARF” or “raw feeding”, the aim is simply to feed real, unprocessed food to dogs. It is our belief that all pets deserve real, wholefoods, just as much as our children do, and that which we aim to eat ourselves. The huge school dinner campaign led by TV Chef Jamie Oliver was of a similar vein but for children. Processed food just doesn’t provide the level of nutrition needed for our canine family members to thrive. Raw feeding isn’t a new trend or craze, it’s simply feeding dogs in a way that they have eaten for thousands of years already.

In the early days of raw feeding, we fed minced meats, ready minced for us to include bone content, and raw meaty bones alongside it. Traditionally, you may have been faced with the task of splitting beef ribs, or cutting up offal and raw green tripe chunks for hungry dogs, who devoured them with gusto. These days you can buy ready-made raw meals with minced bone and offal content, meaning even vegetarians can easily feed real food, without having to handle the meat in its original state.

What is the BARF model ratio?
 • 70% muscle meat, fat, ligaments + sinew
 • 5% liver
 • 5% offal, other secreting organ meats
 • 10% raw edible bone
 • 10% vegetation and fruit matter.
What are FEDIAF guidelines?

FEDIAF is the organisation which sets out the nutritional guidelines for all pet food in Europe. FEDIAF nutritional guidelines consist of recommended nutrient levels for pet foods based on scientific review of vast numbers of peer-reviewed pet food nutrition studies.

The recommendations provide minimum and maximum nutrient levels needed to prevent deficiencies from developing or nutrient toxicity from occurring. Whilst the guidelines are voluntary recommendations, as opposed to legal requirements, we chose to tweak our recipes to meet the standards to offer you even more nutritional quality assurance.

As a dog owner, this means that by feeding ProDog Complete Formula or Puppy Formula raw meals, you can feel confident you are providing the building blocks necessary for optimal canine health.

Whilst FEDIAF guidelines lay out recommended nutrient levels, they do not differentiate between synthetic and wholefood forms of those nutrients. Our expert nutritional team is committed to ensuring every ingredient in ProDog products are from wholefood sources because nutrients taken from natural sources are far more bioavailable and digested more effectively than synthetic ones. Ultimately, this means we are confident the nutrient content of our food is easily absorbed and assimilated by the canine digestive system, therefore exceeding FEDIAF minimal expectations, with the aim of ensuring your dog truly thrives.

What does DEFRA approved mean?

ProDog Raw is registered with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, which means that we must adhere to specific legislation concerning raw food manufacturing. Read more on what it means to be DEFRA approved.

Is frozen raw meat for dogs safe?

It is perfectly safe if you buy your frozen food from a reputable raw dog food supplier, like ProDog, especially when you follow the preparation and handling instructions.

You should always be mindful of standard hygiene precautions when handling raw meat, whether for human or pet consumption. It is advisable to check your raw food supplier has the appropriate accreditations to confirm compliance with a high level of food safety.

ProDog is certified by UK Pet Food under their raw pet food scheme and is also approved by DEFRA (Department of Farming and Rural Affairs). This means a strict code of practice is adhered to, assuring quality and safety.

Not only is raw safe, but it is also a highly beneficial diet for your dog’s health. Find out more here.

What are the benefits & conclusions on raw feeding?

As long as you stick to the feeding guidelines you will only see benefits to your dog’s health. Dogs that are already fed raw have increased vitality, a more stable temperament, better teeth and gums, noticeably shiny coats, healthy skin and shed less. A huge benefit to feeding raw is a significantly reduced and hardened stool which for any dog owner is a massive plus. If you have any concerns about your dog’s health and whether you should feed them raw, speak to your vet first.

Can dogs eat bones & are they harmful?

Yes dogs can eat bones, with a few caveats. Our guide on feeding bones to dogs will give you lots of helpful information about the what, why and how of feeding bones safely. We add ground bone to our recipes (except those marked boneless) as it is a crucial component to a balanced diet for a carnivore.

Cooked bones can be harmful if ingested by a dog, as they can become brittle and can splinter. Raw bones, however, typically do not splinter like cooked bones can and are extremely beneficial to dogs as they can aid with digestion, promote a healthy stool and are also fantastic for fresh breath and strong, clean teeth. Read more on canine oral hygiene and raw food.

Do you have to defrost raw dog food?

We freeze our food at -18 degrees centigrade to retain the ingredients’ nutritional composition and ensure a safe temperature is maintained throughout delivery.

Frozen food should be stored in the freezer until needed. Ideally, defrost in the fridge overnight before feeding your dog, and use it within three days. It is, however, OK to feed if the food is not fully defrosted at mealtime, although some dogs struggle with very cold food. Alternatively, you could submerge in tepid water for a few minutes to speed up the thawing process.

Can you refreeze raw dog food?

Once raw meat for dogs reaches room temperature, it should not be frozen again. Partially frozen food that is still cool to the touch can be frozen. Use the back of your hand to test the temperature if you do not have a food thermometer.

Can you or should you cook raw dog food?

Our food should be fed raw; heat will denature the proteins and alter the composition of the bone, which impacts the nutritional value, and may cause digestive issues.

There are some occasions when slightly cooking raw dog food can be beneficial to particular scenarios. For example, if your dog is not eager to eat raw food. In that case, flash frying can help release the meat aromas and encourage your dog to eat.

We do not advise cooking our raw meat and bone right through due to the bone content. Cooking bone can cause splintering and create a hazard. If you need to add heat to when the food contains bone, then you can flash fry (a few seconds in a frying pan is enough).

How long can you leave raw meat for dogs out of the fridge?

Barf food for dogs should not be left out of the fridge for long periods. The time will depend on the temperature of the environment. If it is a hot day or the room is particularly warm, the time the food is safe to leave out will be less than in cooler temperatures.

We recommend removing uneaten food after 20 minutes if your dog has not eaten it. You can return it to the fridge for the next meal. This practice will ensure the food’s safe temperature is maintained and discourage picky eating.

Can you feed raw meat from a supermarket?

It is OK to feed raw meat from a supermarket. We recommend freezing fresh meat and then defrosting it before feeding to ensure any bacteria or parasites in the meat are killed off. The safest and best raw meat for dogs is produced by specialist companies, such as ProDog. The food is subject to several tests and is frozen at -18 degrees centigrade to ensure the meat is safe.

Store-bought meats are for human consumption, therefore, are intended to be cooked. This means the same level of precautions in terms of bacteria are not taken.

Alternatively, you could buy frozen meat to defrost and feed.

Please be aware that feeding meat alone will not provide your dog with complete nutrition. Several ingredients are required to provide a dog with all the vitamins and minerals required to support health. Our raw feeding guide explains more.

On occasion, buying supermarket meat is OK. For example, if you need convenient meal ideas for your dog whilst on holiday or run short on your usual raw dog food delivery and need to fill the gap with store-bought food.

Can you mix raw with kibble?

It is preferable to feed a solely raw diet for dogs; however, if your circumstances are such that this is not possible, then you can mix the food types.

It is important to highlight there can be a digestive impact of mixing the food types. The high starch ingredients often used in kibble can alter the ph levels of a dog’s stomach, therefore affecting the digestibility of some elements of raw food meals.

We provide detailed information on this topic in our raw feeding guide, along with tips about how to support your dog’s digestion if you choose to mix raw with kibble.

Can you mix raw with wet dog food?

You can feed your dog a combination of raw dog food and prepared wet food.

A 100% raw diet for dogs is optimum for the best health results. If you need to combine raw food with processed wet food, it is important to pay close attention to how your dog responds. Digestion can be affected when mixing varying food types, so monitoring how your dog presents and their toilet habits is advisable.

The degree of digestive impact will depend on your dog and the ingredients used in the commercial food. A large proportion of processed pet foods contain ingredients that are not species-appropriate for dogs, therefore, can impact enzymes and acids in the stomach, making some elements of a raw food diet difficult for your dog to assimilate.

It is, however, preferable to feed ‘some’ raw food rather than none. Should you choose to mix food types, please follow the tips to support your dog’s digestion in our raw feeding guide. The same digestive support is advised when mixing raw and processed wet food, as recommended when mixing raw and kibble.

My dog has canine pancreatitis, can I feed it raw food?

Dr Nick Thompson, our consultant vet, has written extensively on this topic. In this article on canine pancreatitis, he explains why a natural raw diet is absolutely the correct choice to help your dog overcome canine pancreatitis. If you have any further questions after reading this please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Can I feed your raw food to my cat?

No, we do not recommend that you feed our raw dog food recipes to your cat, as our raw formulas are designed specifically for the nutritional needs of dogs. We are aware that some people feed our Pure range to their cats and make their own additions using supplements, or ingredients specific to cats’ nutritional needs, however, and a specialised cat food range is something we are considering producing.

What are the dimensions of your raw food tubs?

Our raw food tub dimensions are:

18cm x 11cm x 10cm for 1kg tubs and
18cm x 11cm x 5cm for 500g tubs.

Can I return the tubs or wool liners?

Sadly, we have not been able to accept returns on the yellow tubs since July 2020 due to new restrictions enforced by trading standards as a result of COVID 19, which is why the yellow tubs are no longer on the returns form. ProDog treats were rewarded in exchange for the return of wool liners; we required a minimum of 6 liners to be returned at one time, in exchange for one packet of treats.

Our tubs and liners are fully recyclable so please recycle locally for the foreseeable future. Read more detailed information about our approach to packaging and how you can do your bit for the environment.

Can I recycle your tubs and liners?
